Holly Springs grew up during the great antebellum cotton boom. General Grant set up a supply depot here in 1862 before moving in on Vicksburg. The town was recaptured by General Van Dorn, who took about 1,500 union prisoners and destroyed Grant's supplies. Other places of significance include The Kate Freeman Clark Art Gallery, reputedly the world's largest collection of art works by a single artist, and the Holly Springs National Forest which covers 152,207 acres in Northeast Mississippi.
